History of Artic, Indiana

Dee Howarth will be at the Library on Wednesday, October 7th, to give a presentation on Artic, Indiana. "History of Artic, Indiana" will take place from 5:30 - 6:30 pm in the Assembly Room of the Main Library. Many current ghost towns had great hopes in their early days, and Artic is one such place. It thrived in the 1880s when the Wabash railroad came through. Today, it has essentially disappeared. Howarth's ancestors were early pioneers of Troy Township and lived near Artic. Her great grandfather, Curtis Casebeer, operated a welding shop in Artic. This spurred her interest in finding out more about the history of a nearly forgotten town. Howarth is a retired 6th grade science and social studies teacher from DeKalb Eastern Community Schools. A native of Franklin Township and current Clear Lake resident, she developed a strong interest in local history. After retiring, she continued work begun by her late husband, Bill Howarth, organizing the history of Steuben County’s one-room schools. She serves as secretary of the Fremont Area Historical Society and has presented programs on one-room schools, Fremont early history, Clear Lake history, and area cemeteries. She has also presented programs on Troy Township pioneers and Franklin Township at the Butler Public Library. Those interested in DeKalb County History are invited to attend what will be an interesting and informative presentation. No registration is required.
